Most lamps light for a few seconds when you power the car on. That check is not a fault by itself. This page does not replace the owner’s manual for your model year and market.
What it means
Electric power steering lightens the wheel. This lamp stays on when that assist has a fault, and the wheel can become heavy, especially at low speed. A short hum while you turn is the motor working and is not itself this warning. Holding the wheel hard against the lock for more than a few seconds can heat the assist even when the lamp is off. The Han uses this same electric-steering lamp. The longer car feels the loss of assist most in a slow, tight turn.
What to do
Park as soon as you can do it safely. Expect the wheel to need more effort, and skip a trip that needs tight manoeuvres until the steering is checked. If the wheel is only heavy after a long spell of turning while stationary, pausing for several minutes can let the protection cool, but a lamp that stays on still needs a check.

Common questions
- The wheel is heavy only at parking speed. Is that this lamp?
- Low-speed turns are where lost assist shows up first. If the lamp is on, have the steering checked. If the lamp is off and the weight came after holding full lock, a few minutes of rest can let the protection cool.
- There is a short hum when I turn. Is the system failing?
- A short hum can be the assist motor working. This warning is the lamp that stays on, or a wheel that stays heavy after the lamp comes on.
